January 2016

January 21

The meeting was called to order by President Bill Dunlevy at 7:00 after our monthly potluck.  26 attended.

Old business – none

New Business – The Anchorage Boat Show has invited us to provide a free panning booth at the Sullivan Arena March 3-6.  They will provide our Chapter $750 for Gold and expenses.  Our Chapter voted not to be a vendor at this event but has agreed to participate and will reserve $200 for our Chapter.  Sign-up sheet was provided.

The BLM has asked us to participate in Out Door Week again this year.  This happens in May.

We have had no contact about the Ice Fishing Jamboree from Swims Like A Fish.  The schedule for this event has changed in the past.

Meeting was adjourned at 7:10.

Respectfully submitted by Bonnie Tisler, Sec. Tres.

Guest Speaker this month was Ron Benkert from the Alaska Fish and Game office in Palmer.  He announced that dredging and high banker permits can be obtained free at local offices and can also be issued here for activities in other mining areas.  Permits for Petersville and Caribou  Creek need a general permit for each participant.  He suggested family members also obtain their own individual permits to use the equipment. Salmon spawning streams can also obtain a permit for the up-stream area above the spawning.

The DEC requires the permit to be on your person.  He answered all questions very well.  One was about enforcement.  They are Wildlife State Troopers , State Rangers as in Hatcher Pass State Park, and Alaska Fish and Game.  DEC and DNR rarely enforce.

Ron has worked to unify the permit process to benefit the recreational miners.  Fish and Game will accept applications for permits for each stream you may like to explore.

No permit is required if not using a suction dredge or high banker.  Special permits are required for dredges larger than 6 inches.

One guest from Oregon was amazed by the streamlined permit process and that a Fish and Game employee would come to speak with us and field questions.  This does not happen in other States.
